What
Advent is the season observed in the church in the weeks before Christmas and is a time of waiting, preparation and celebration. It has a dual purpose of focussing our thoughts on Jesus’ first coming which we celebrate at Christmas and on his expected return in the future.
Tradition
Advent has many traditions associated with it, advent candles and calendars count the weeks and days till Christmas. Set colours for the occasion mark a change in the church year and certain themes like joy, hope, peace and love become key focal points. For a while fasting was part of the advent season with people abstaining from certain things in the 40 days before Christmas day.
Conspiracy
In resent years some Christians have become disillusioned with what they see in the run up to Christmas and have sought to claim back the season of advent. One such movement has been the Advent Conspiracy which set out to challenge the church to think differently about this period and approach it in a new way. The call to Worship Fully, Spend Less, Give More and to Love All has challenged 1000’s of people to stand against the tide of commercial Christmas and seek another way of celebrating Advent.

Advent 2014
This booklet combines some of the traditional themes used in the advent season as well as those from the Advent Conspiracy to help us journey through the season together. You can use the reflections by yourself or in a small group or cell. The themes will be used by the preachers on the four Sunday services in advent which will offer another perspective on the topics covered. Our hope is that these things will help you focus on the journey to Christmas and allow God to challenge each of us again through the giving of his son, Jesus.
