Justice

We live in a world where justice often seems to be lacking. We see people getting way with using others to get their own way. The poor get poorer and the rich get richer and no one seems to stand up for those who are really in need. The world has always been like this to some extent but it can at times seem like we live in a particularly unjust time.

Justice, as we will see in the reflections that follow, was not always a popular concept. To be just meant that people couldn’t become rich through exploitation and greed. It meant that choices had to be made considering how it would affect everyone. This was not how many acted, including those who were supposed to be leaders, scholars and priests for the people.

Justice weighs heavily upon all of us so that we should make decisions that do not exploit another. We are called to be people that seek to lift burdens from others’ shoulders; to share what we have so that all are equal and cared for; to be a people who cry out for those who are treated unjustly so that all can live in this world in peace.
