If you are a fan of nature documentaries, I am sure you will have seen David Attenborough quietly talking over the video of a river on the African plains. Birds cautiously swim on the surface and lions and antelope drink at the edge. Under the water, other creatures lurk, fish, hippos and crocodiles making the most of the water that they all need.
In Isaiah we are told that the spring that rises up will give the wild animals and owls water to drink and, in Ezekiel, the river teems with all kinds of fish. The water that flows from the presence of God sustains life in all its forms.
This variety of life that lives off the river reminds us that God’s mission is to all people. We are all called to be witnesses of the good news of Jesus to all those who we may meet. That may mean the rich and the powerful or those that have nothing. It could be to those at the end of their life or those just beginning.
When we take seriously the call to stand in the stream and follow God’s Spirit wherever it flows we will find we are taken to all who need His life-giving water and they will be from every tribe and nation.
