Worship is what we do!
You are doing it right now, as you read this, in fact you have been doing it all day, every day since you were born.
If this doesn’t make sense let me try to explain. Worship is a big word that is often made very small by our use of it. The way we talk about worship in church often confines it to that which we do between four walls, once a week for an hour or so. It includes singing, praying and listening to someone talk and not much more.
Worship though, is so much bigger.
The word worship is from an old english word which meant to give honour to someone or something or to give it worth. So, when we invest time, money, and our allegiance in something we give it worth, and so it becomes something we worship.
When we choose to invest in a relationship, we give it worth. When we give our support to a cause and buy a t-shirt to show our allegiance, we give it worth. When we decided to give our time and money to one thing over another we have decided that one thing is worth more to us than the other.
You can probably think of lots of things you worship in your life now. Your husband/wife, children, pets, football team, the latest gadget, fishing, fashion, food, exercise, church, Jesus, etc, etc. We all have a list of things we worship the question is which do we give the most value to and the most worth? Which is the one we worship the most?
As people of faith we know the name that should be on top of our list and sometimes we find it easier than others to worship Jesus, the one we are called to claim as our Lord and Saviour.
At Advent this is no different.
We can all proclaim the ‘reason for the season’ but often we find it hard to stay focussed. The world around us sweeps us along in a rush of consumerism and we find ourselves spending more time and more money, making sure everything will be perfect than we do worshiping the one who the season is about.

In the Christmas story we see the main players responding to God’s unfolding plan in the pages of the gospels. Mary, Zechariah, the Shepherds and Magi all respond to God’s breaking into the world to bring change through Jesus with worship, sometimes in song and sometimes with action. It is a challenge to us all this advent season.
How will we worship fully this advent season? How will we bring joy to the world?
